With new safety features, a luxurious Overland edition, and a new Trailhawk edition, the 2017 Jeep Cherokee strikes out on several new paths at once. This SUV’s curb appeal goes beyond its seven-slot grille. The handsome sheet metal and sophisticated lines denote its stance as one of the more refined Jeeps today. With skid plates at the ready, Trailhawks exude Jeep’s adventurous attitude. Overland editions wear special body-color door cladding and wheel flares. Bronze dresses up the 75th Anniversary model while its cabin dresses in a unique cloth-mesh combination upholstery. Eight editions allow the cabins to go from high quality to premium with lots of style along the way. Tangerine and red accents provide sporty contrast to the seats. Power chairs and heated seats add more comfort. Higher editions wear leather upholstery for an upscale look. Backseat passengers enjoy reclining seats and dedicated HVAC vents. Cargo capability starts with a 24-cu.ft. hold and continues with a folding 2nd row and a folding front passenger seat. A rearview camera and a touchscreen are standards. If you choose the 8.4-inch UConnect touchscreen, you also get a wide variety of dedicated apps. The instrumentation panel can be upgrade with a seven-inch display screen. Passengers are protected by eight airbags and whiplash-lessening active headrests. New for 2017, drivers can get Jeep’s automatic parking system for parallel and perpendicular spaces. Adaptive cruise control, a forward collision warning, and an autobrake work with the driver to reduce the chances of an accident. A lane warning has an automatic lane assist. To maintain an electronic eye on the car’s sides, there’s a rear cross-traffic alert and a blind spot monitor.

Two powertrain choices are on tap. The I-4 cranks out 178 horsepower, and it is quite fuel efficient. If you need to tow or you are a driving enthusiast, you may want to step up to the V6. The engine cranks out 271 horsepower. It can tow up to 2,000 pounds. Jeep has utilized a stop-start system to reduce fuel use during long pauses such as redlights and fast food drive-throughs. One of the most remarkable aspects of the Cherokee is its nine-speed automatic transmission. No other small crossover can claim such precision. With more speeds, it better utilizes low-speed torque rev. This helps with towing and offroad crawling. An electronic range select lets you tell the transmission what gear ratios suit current conditions. In addition to the standard front wheel drivetrain, Jeep offers two all-wheel drive systems. Active Drive I is an excellent companion for road challenges and can be used for some off-road use. For crawl capability, Active Drive II is standard on the new Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk edition. An off-road suspension smooths rut response and lets the driver add height for better ground clearance.
