What's New for the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk?
After seven years into what’s turning out to be a lengthy fourth production cycle, Chrysler has undertaken a huge overhaul of its midsize crossover SUV under the Jeep marquee: the Grand Cherokee. On April 2017, at the New York International Auto Show, the automaker unveiled what is being touted as the most powerful iteration of the Grand Cherokee yet. It is suffixed as the “Trackhawk.”
The engine on the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is the brand-new 6.2-liter HEMI V8. While previous model years had a larger, 6.4-liter HEMI V8 that generated 475 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, the Trackhawk engine is supercharged and outguns it by an output of 707 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque. Still on board is the 8-speed ZF automatic transmission attached to the engine. On the Trackhawk, Chrysler adds shift paddles on the steering wheel to exercise greater control over gear shifting—similar to a manual transmission. All-wheel drive is standard for maximizing off-road performance and traction on slippery surfaces. With its powertrain layout, the vehicle can tow up to 7,200 lbs. As a midsize crossover, the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk seats up to five people—with 105.4 cubic feet of passenger volume and truck space that can be expanded to 68.3 cubic feet when you fold down the rear seatback. The cabin is race-inspired, with sports-style seat bolsters at the front seats and carbon fiber accents lining the entire interior; there’s the option of enhancing the cabin with Laguna leather seat trim. Standard comfort and convenience features include Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free phone operation and streaming audio, remote keyless entry and vehicle start, and an infotainment system that includes an audio display screen and flash memory card slot. For crash safety, Chrysler equips the 2018 Grand Cherokee Trackhawk with a pair of front impact airbags that face the driver and front passenger, a knee airbag for the driver’s side, a pair of side impact airbags mounted on the front seats, and dual side curtains flanking both rows of seats from the roof. The Trackhawk also comes with electronic vehicle stability for maintaining absolute driving control, hill start assist to prevent the vehicle from rolling backward when driving from a parked position, all-wheel traction control to keep the tires firmly on the road surface, and hill descent control for a smooth and safe downward drive. For braking, the crossover has a high-performance Brembo brake system that consists of six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers to maximize the ability to bring it to a stop as soon as possible when the brake pedal is applied.
